***A REAL cowboy Western with Burt Lancaster*** A noble foster brother (Burt Lancaster) on a ranch in Northwest Colorado is accused of making a woman pregnant (Sally Forrest) by her two violent brothers (Hugh O’Brian & John Ireland), but this was actually the work of the questionable natural brother (Robert Walker). Joanne Dru is on hand as the wife of the latter, but might understandably have eyes for the former. As the plot blurb suggests, “Vengeance Valley” (1951) is just as much a soap opera as it is horse opera, but it doesn’t skimp on the typical Western staples with gorgeous Western locations (Colorado), saloon confrontations, fistfights, gunfights, steam engine trains, breaking horses, rustling and cattle drives. Speaking of the latter, the movie features an interesting narration by one of the ranch hands, Hewie (Carleton Carpenter), which offers vital information about the exploits of cattle wanderings during Winter, Spring round-up, cattle drives and buying & selling. The film doesn’t overstay its welcome at 1 hour, 23 minutes, and was shot at Coal Creek & Oak Creek in Northwest Colorado. GRADE: B
Heading east to Fort Worth to hire a schoolteacher for his frontier town home, Link Jones is stranded with singer Billie Ellis and gambler Sam Beasley when their train is held up. For shelter, Jones leads them to his nearby former home, where he was brought up an outlaw. Finding the gang still living in the shack, Jones pretends to be ready to return to a life crime.
Retired wealthy sea captain Jim McKay arrives in the Old West, where he becomes embroiled in a feud between his future father-in-law, Major Terrill, and the rough and lawless Hannasseys over a valuable patch of land.
Quick Draw McGraw becomes El Kabong the Hero and fights El Bad Guy with his steel guitar. El Kabong and Babalooie ride into a garishly colored town in Mexico inhabited by Day of the Dead skeleton townfolk. El Bad Guy and his cohorts are generally out to get the townsfolk.
Peterson has a plan to obtain all the ranches in the valley. He gives Carson a phony Spanish land grant and has him pose as the Mexican owner. When Fred and Fuzzy have their cattle stolen by Peterson's men, they quickly become involved in the scheme.
Four former harlots try to leave the wild west (Colorado, to be exact) and head north to make a better life for themselves. Unfortunately someone from Cody's past won't let it happen that easily.
The brother (House Peters Jr.) of rancher Bill Martin (Bill Elliott) is killed in a stampede started by cattleman. Bill returns to the Fargo country to take his brother's place and is welcomed by law-abiding cattleman MacKenzie (Jack Ingram)) and his daughter Kathy (Phyllis Coates). The leader of the ruthless cattle interests are townsman Austin (Arthur Space) and his henchmen Red (Myron Healey), Link (Robert J. Wilke) and Albord (Terry Frost). Bill has the idea of putting up barbed wire to keep the herds from been driven over the land cultivated by the farmers. He, aided by Tad Sloan (Fuzzy Knight), produces the wire by make-shift methods, but it proves effective. The cattleman charge in court that the wire is dangerous to their herds but lose the case. Austin orders his men to seize Bill, bale him in strands of the wire, and throw him on the stage of the town hall during a fall festival. Bill doesn't take kindly to this and it precipitates open war.
A former gunslinger is forced to take up arms again when he and his cattle crew are threatened by a corrupt lawman.
After serving a five year prison sentence for allowing his men to destroy a town in a drunken spree, a trail boss is hired by the same town's leading citizen to drive their cattle to Fort Clemson. Complicating matters, a rival cattle baron also hires the cattle driver to lead his herd.
Will Penny, an aging cowpoke, takes a job on a ranch which requires him to ride the line of the property looking for trespassers or, worse, squatters. He finds that his cabin in the high mountains has been appropriated by a woman whose guide to Oregon has deserted her and her son. Too ashamed to kick mother and child out just as the bitter winter of the mountains sets in, he agrees to share the cabin until the spring thaw. But it isn't just the snow that slowly thaws; the lonely man and woman soon forget their mutual hostility and start developing a deep love for one another.
Jim Waters arrives at Ed Parks' ranch to find Parks' cattle herd mysteriously increased. Hamp Harvey has been losing cattle and he suspects Parks. But the culprit is Harvey's foreman Brent who gets his orders from the town's leading citizen Sig Barstell. Barstell wants Harvey's ranch and after trying to frame Harvey by killing Parks, Waters takes over and goes after both the killer and the rustlers.
An intimate story of the enduring bond of friendship between two hard-living men, set against a sweeping backdrop: the American West, post-World War II, in its twilight. Pete and Big Boy are masters of the prairie, but ultimately face trickier terrain: the human heart.
