Compromise

It is the last night of 14-year-old Astrid's and Issi's holiday by the beach. The mission is clear, especially for Issi: to find a guy and hopefully lose her virginity before the holidays are over.

Upstairs-downstairs neighbors Dan and Mia have never met, but the thin floor between their apartments offers its own kind of intimacy. In an alternative reality where sounds – and the sensory memories that accompany them – can be captured in food storage containers, Dan approaches Mia with a proposal. He offers some of the sounds of his life in exchange for some of the sounds of hers.

The Painted Door is a Canadian short drama film, directed by Bruce Pittman and released in 1984. Based on a short story by Sinclair Ross, the film was produced by the National Film Board of Canada and Atlantis Films of Toronto. It follows a housewife who struggles with loneliness after her husband ventures into a blizzard. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Live Action Short Film.
