Jesse W. Haywood (Don Knotts) graduates from dental school in Philadelphia in 1870 and goes west to become a frontier dentist. Haywood inadvertently becomes the legendary "Doc the Haywood" after he guns down "Arnold the Kid".

When Letty Mason relocates to West Texas, she finds herself unsettled by the ever-present wind and sand. During the talent show auditions, they meet a big-time producer named Jackal Johnson, who tries to make the group into superstars, but the girls run into many problems.

Two British women claim to have been thrown into a time warp where they saw Marie Antoinette as they were strolling through the gardens at Versailles Palace in France.
