Before the Seavers leave for a family vacation to San Francisco, they drop off their pets - Chance, an adventurous American bulldog; Shadow, a wise golden retriever; and Sassy, a cautious cat - at a friend's ranch. But when the animals start to worry that they've been left for good, the three embark together on a treacherous and thrilling journey to find their way back home through the California wilderness.

Only when Blue and Yellow have destroyed and used all surrounding natural resources in their race to build the tallest house on the beach - they discover that Green has found the true values in life on a mountaintop, in harmony with nature, surrounded by family and love.

When the hard-working bread-winner Katja and Hendrik the intellectual meet Saida, an illegal immigrant from Algeria, and accept to organize a "passport marriage" between her and Hendrik, they are caught up in a chain of events and feelings over which they have no control.

In the arctic, as Saiva is being born, a shaman declares that she is evil and will bring harm to all who become involved with her. Saiva is cast out of her tribe of herders and grows up to live a nomadic existence with Anja, a young woman she adopts as an infant. Then Loki, an injured and starving soldier, stumbles into their isolated lives. The women nurse him back to health, but treachery, violence and doom await them all.

As a favor to his father's best friend, a young man agrees to escort a woman to America where she's expected to devote herself to her studies.
