Yikes, talk about adulatory! Carey Wilson does go slightly over the top with this appreciation of Matthew Fontaine Maury. This (Tom Neal) is a naval officer whose injury in a stagecoach accident condemns him to a frustrating desk-bound career amidst the maps and charts. Initially despondent, he soon discovers he has an aptitude for following the tides, currents and winds and for learning how to predict how they could impact on shipping. He manages to overcome the scepticism of his peers but is forced to Europe during the civil war where he acts on behalf of the Confederacy (he was from Virginia). Not included in the general amnesty after the war, he had to wait for many years before finally being permitted to return home where he took up lecturing. This was a man who was instrumental in quite significantly improving maritime safety and in plotting improved trade and underwater cable routes, but I suspect even he might blush at the effusiveness of the narration here that only just stops short of crediting him with inventing the wind itself.

Based on a classic Japanese fable, The Orchard was made by one-man band Bob Stenhouse, who had been nominated for an Academy Award the previous decade for pioneer tale The Frog, The Dog and The Devil. The conflict between duty and conscience is explored in the WWII drama The Deep Six. To prove that he's worthy of command, Austin volunteers for a dangerous mission: the rescue of a group of US pilots on a Japanese-held island. The ubiquitous William Bendix costars as Frenchy Shapiro (!), Austin's Jewish petty officer and severest critic. If the film has a villain, it is Keenan Wynn as ambitious Lt. Commander Edge, who seems to despise anyone who isn't a mainline WASP.

The Battle of Okinawa

The Americans are swiftly closing on Okinawa, an island just south of the Japanese mainland. The Imperial command sends top generals and several army divisions to defend it at all costs. The mission quickly degenerates as vital resources and troops are diverted to other islands. After a civilian evacuation ends in tragedy most of non-combatants are forced to remain on the island. Many convert to soldier status. Tokyo sends mixed messages that squander time and resources, as when they order the defenders to build an airstrip for aircraft that never come. The truth soon becomes obvious: the high command decides that the island cannot be held and effectively abandons the Okinawan defenders. When the Americans land many troops are deployed in the wrong places. As the slaughter mounts, a suicidal attitude takes hold.
