A group of Boston-bred gangsters set up shop in balmy Florida during the Prohibition era, facing off against the competition and the Ku Klux Klan.

A stuntman who dabbles as a petty thief for corrupt policemen decides to quit. His bosses do not let him go but, instead, he is tortured. His consistent brushes with the law earn him a prize on his head and attention from a daily.

Having fathered an illegitimate child with his lover, Marie, feckless soldier Franz Woyzeck takes odd jobs around his small town to provide some extra money for them. One job is volunteering for experiments conducted by a local doctor, who puts Woyzeck on a diet of peas. This serves to drive him close to madness, and the discovery that Marie is involved in an affair with the local drum major exacerbates the situation. Pushed too far, Woyzeck resorts to violence.

In 1841, young Ishmael signs up for service aboard the Pequod, a whaler sailing out of New Bedford.
