Friends Franz and Bela work in a deli belonging to Mr. Wallis. Franz is the manager and Bela a salesclerk. Both get to know the lovely Lilo. The forester Auer is found killed on a Sunday in the forest, and the police begins a feverish search for the culprit. Only pastor Gruber already knows who it is. It is Hannes Reyer, son of the richest farmer in the region, who has confessed the act of murder to him. Gruber, however, is bound to his obligation to secrecy. But when the young Ernst Nortinger is arrested under suspicion for murder, he knows what he has to do and relinquishes his priesthood in order to report Hannes to the police. But things don’t get so far, as Hannes dies in an accident during an altercation with the priest. Nonetheless, Gruber does not return to his office. In quiescence, he wants to find out whether he still can handle the burden of the priesthood. Senior pastor Bachmayer however is convinced that he will return.

The story takes place in the early 1950s in the small village of Oberschönau in the Bavarian Alps. The teacher's daughter Maria and the young farmer Mathias want to get married soon. To avoid being arrested, the accused flees abroad. That's why most of the villagers believe that Mathias is the murderer. But Maria firmly believes in his innocence.

In the first light of day, one can see a mountain farm close to the forest. Nothing stirs far and wide. Suddenly, a figure comes out of the forest, running quickly to the farm. Mutz Hagedorn has just graduated from grammar school, much to the delight of her aunt Jenny, who cares for her like a mother. Then she learns from notary Strohbein that she has inherited the hotel “Zur Jungfrau” from her uncle, it is located on Lake Constance in Üttlisborn. On the way there, she meets the winsome Konrad on the train. Both have the same destination, only at the train station, their paths split. When she then stands before “her” hotel, she’s appalled. The “Jungfrau” is an old, dilapidated eyesore, because people with taste put up at the “Mönch”, which is owned by the Leitner family. Both families have been at odds with each other for years. Then, Mutz learns from Konrad that he as well is a Leitner and the owner of the “Mönch”. Now, she wants to be victorious, win the trial once and for all. Konrad accepts the challenge. Firstly, the “Jungfrau” is turned into a modern hotel in no time.
