Budiman, a 10-year-old boy, lives in the village and dreams of going to Jakarta. This obsession grows when his uncle sends him the map of Jakarta plus his self-portrait, standing in front of a luxurious car and house. His father, Darsono, works as a village official, but the village head, Lurah Sarkawi, uses Darsono as a scapegoat to cover up his corruption. So Budiman wants to free his father from prison. So he leaves his village in Muntilan, Central Java for Jakarta. Initially, he is accompanied by Rini but they separate later. Then Budiman meets Marsya, a singer, who is also the daughter of her uncle's boss. On the journey, Budiman is chased by Sarkawi’s goons, Diran and Dirun. The film resembles the Hollywood film, "Home Alone".

Ranubaya and Empu Hanggareksa, Kamandanu’s father, are fellow students from the same school. But while Hanggareksa serves Kartanegara, the king of Singasari; Ranubaya refuses to. A messenger of Kublai Khan from Mongolia offers Kertanegara a peaceful relationship. When Kertanegara refuses the offer, the Mongolian messenger kidnaps Ranubaya.

The opportunity comes when they find a the wallet of a wealthy man, who is impressed when they return it to him, and provides them with the capital to open a food stall, which they use as a stepping stone toward opening a restaurant. Through this story, the director, Chairul Raya, attempts to depict the way of life of the poor, while using the subplot of the love story between the clown and his wife to display his disdain for the mainstream tendencies in the Indonesian film industry. This film is at once moving and humorous.

Budi and Rosi are assigned by the teacher to raise the flag on Mondays. But when the teacher gives Budi the flag for washing, he falls asleep and forgets that the bucket he is using to soak the flag, is usually used by his neighbour, Bang Ali, to wash his bajaj (motor tricycle). Budi panics when he learns that the flag is missing. He calls Rosie and they look for it around the house. Then Bang Ali returns the bucket, and they rediscover the flag. But when they wash and dry it, the flag goes "missing" again. This takes Budi and Rosi on an "adventure" to find the flag again.

The togetherness of Grego and Dea leads to a deep friendship, and love. Unfortunately, they come from different worlds and Grego is already engaged. The love between them finally makes Dea insist on returning back to her body that is lying in coma in a hospital. Dea enters her body to come back to life and to remind Grego of his promise of love.
