Johnny Carson: King of Late Night

Chronological look at the life and career of Johnny Carson (1925-2005), with commentary from an ex-wife and more than 30 fellow comedians, friends, employees, and biographers. The biography defines why Carson was an enduring star (his cool, his timing, his genuine laugh, his breadth of knowledge) and pursues his motivations and inner self (a loner with a drinking problem, a decent Midwesterner whose mother withheld approval, a quiet person who loved to entertain). The key to understanding him, argues the biography, is his love of magic.

Johnny Carson - His Favorite Moments from 'The Tonight Show' - '70s & '80s: The Master of Laughs!

Volume 2 of 'The Johnny Carson Collection' - The Best of the '70s & '80s. The moments that spring immediately to mind include some very funny sketches with Betty White, a superb comedienne. And besides being a great musician, Doc Severinsen can be very funny, as you'll see when he shares a Thanksgiving memory of the past. Wild Kingdom's Jim Fowler and Joan Embry of the San Diego Zoo managed to bring to the show wildlife of every kind. One of the most requested involved a marmoset which showed no respect whatsoever. Jimmy Stewart - what a class act! When Jimmy read a poem dedicated to his dog, it generated the most requests ever! So sit back, relax and enjoy these special moments.

Johnny Carson - His Favorite Moments from 'The Tonight Show' - '80s & '90s: The King of Late Night

Volume 3 of 'The Johnny Carson Collection' - The Best of the '80s & '90s. Some of today's top comedy stars made their Tonight debuts around this time. Roseanne Arnold was just a Domestic-Goddess-in-Training when she first appeared on the show. Other great comics like Steve Martin, George Carlin, and Albert Brooks continued to visit, and I'm delighted with their success. This volume reminds me that our batting average with talking or singing birds was not good. Once they got in front of the lights, they clammed up like captured spies - except Pancho the Parrot. This month of May, 1992, was an emotional one for all of us. Many friends dropped in to say goodbye. The program of May 21, 1992, provided some electric moments. My final guest was Bette Midler, and the memory of that night will be with me forever. I hope you enjoy all the fond memories in this volume.

Johnny Carson - His Favorite Moments from 'The Tonight Show' - '60s & '70s: Heeere's Johnny!

Volume 1 of 'The Johnny Carson Collection' - The Best of the '60s & '70s. I'm often asked, "What is your favorite moment during the 30 years you hosted The Tonight Show?" I really don't have just one. The times I enjoyed the most were the spontaneous, unplanned segments that just happened, like Ed Ames' infamous "Tomahawk Toss" that produced one of the longest laughs in television history. When these lucky moments happen, you just go with them, and enjoy the experience and high of the moment. And of course, the planned moments bring their own surprises. Little did we suspect that when Tiny Tim married Miss Vicki on our show that, outside of man's first walk on the moon, it would become the most watched event of the year. And with Leno's and Letterman's first appearances on The Tonight Show... Well, look at them now! I hope this collection of moments from The Tonight Show of the '60s & '70s includes some of your favorites.

Finster

Howard Finster, the grandfather of the Southern Folk Art movement was a pioneer that showed the world that Art can thrive outside of museums and galleries in ordinary places and in everyday objects. He took what others might deem trash or obsolete and turned it into something contemplative. He opened Paradise Garden for the world to enjoy, a true testament that Art comes to life, when people are able to interact with it. Howard Finster showed the world that objects surrounding us can take on a new life, in a sometimes-magical way, and communicate messages that can lead to transformation.

You're in the Picture

Himself - You're in the Picture is an American television game show that aired on CBS for only one episode on Friday, January 20, 1961 at 9:30pm, the evening of the Inauguration of John F. Kennedy. The show, created by Don Lipp and Bob Synes, was an attempt by its host and star Jackie Gleason to "demonstrate versatility" after his success within variety shows and The Honeymooners. Gleason was joined by Johnny Olson as announcer and Dennis James doing live commercials for sponsor Kellogg's cereals. Technically, the show could be said to have run for two episodes, since the following Friday, Gleason appeared at the same time, but in a studio "stripped to the brick walls" and using the time to give what Time magazine called an "inspiring post-mortem", asking rhetorically "how it was possible for a group of trained people to put on so big a flop." Time later cited You're in the Picture as one piece of evidence that the 1960-61 TV season was the "worst in the 13-year history of U.S. network television."

Get Smart

Herald (uncredited) - Get Smart is an American comedy television series that satirizes the secret agent genre. Created by Mel Brooks with Buck Henry, the show stars Don Adams, Barbara Feldon, and Edward Platt. Henry said they created the show by request of Daniel Melnick, who was a partner, along with Leonard Stern and David Susskind, of the show's production company, Talent Associates, to capitalize on "the two biggest things in the entertainment world today"—James Bond and Inspector Clouseau. Brooks said: "It's an insane combination of James Bond and Mel Brooks comedy." This is the only Mel Brooks production to feature a laugh track. The success of the show eventually spawned the follow-up films The Nude Bomb and Get Smart, Again!, as well as a 1995 revival series and a 2008 film remake. In 2010, TV Guide ranked Get Smart's opening title sequence at No. 2 on its list of TV's Top 10 Credits Sequences, as selected by readers.
